Cobb County was one of 10 Georgia counties formed in 1832 out of former Cherokee land, but the settlement that became Marietta existed nearly a decade earlier. The county was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, a U.S. representative, senator, and Supreme Court judge. Incorporated in 1834, the city of Marietta is said to be named after Judge Cobb’s wife, Mary Moore. During its first 30 years, Marietta was home to a railroad, a horse racing track, and the state's military academy. Marietta also witnessed the Trail of Tears and was the site of much Civil War activity.
