Something happened between last summer and this one, and if you have been out of town or just heads-down at work, you may not have caught the full picture. Four longtime East Cobb restaurants closed inside a hundred-day window this spring. Two more announced relocations. Meanwhile, the Avenue East Cobb finished absorbing a run of new tenants that shifted the center of gravity for casual dinners toward Roswell Road. If your regular Thursday spot still feels the same, it probably is. If your Saturday spot suddenly doesn't, this is why.
The thesis is simple: the strip-center anchors that defined East Cobb dining for three decades gave up a lot of ground this year, and most of the momentum moved to a small cluster along Roswell Road between Johnson Ferry and Lower Roswell. Here is what changed and where the room has moved.
The closures that reset the map
Four names carried real weight for longtime residents. La Madeleine at Providence Square Shopping Center closed permanently on May 22, 2026 at 3 pm after more than 30 years in East Cobb, following the chain's Sandy Springs/Dunwoody closing in January and leaving only Duluth and Buford as regular metro Atlanta locations. That is not a small footprint to lose. Providence Square had used La Madeleine as its lunch anchor since the Clinton administration.
Chicago's Steak and Seafood at 4401 Shallowford Road in the Publix at Shallowford shopping center officially closed on May 31, 2026, ending its 36-year run following recent health code citations and general economic pressures. Thirty-six years. That is the kind of tenure that gets you into wedding rehearsal-dinner rotations and anniversary traditions, and now it is gone.
Heavenly BBQ, in the former Willie Jewell's Bar-B-Q space at Sprayberry Square, announced it would permanently close on Sunday, March 1, 2026. And Mirko Pasta at Merchants Walk closed in mid-May 2026, taking its build-your-own pasta bowls and casual Italian menu with it. The Mirko space has a successor lined up. Shake Shack is planned for an outparcel at 1281 Johnson Ferry Road, backfilling the former Duck Donuts and current Mirko Pasta spaces at the Kohl's and Whole Foods anchored Merchants Walk. That is a very different draw than fresh pasta.
One more that surprised people: the Wendy's at the corner of Johnson Ferry and East Cobb Drive abruptly closed on February 19, 2026 as part of a broader corporate restructuring, with Wendy's announcing plans to shutter roughly 5% to 6% of its nearly 6,000 U.S. locations in the first half of 2026. The earlier Johnson Ferry Wendy's, at 3120 Johnson Ferry, has since been redeveloped into Piedmont Urgent Care. Two Wendy's off one corridor, both gone inside two years.
Where the room went: Avenue East Cobb
The Avenue quietly finished a two-year lease-up and is now the most crowded room in East Cobb dining. The mall reached near-full capacity at 96% leased under North American Properties, up from about 75% when the group took over management in July 2021.
The tenants doing the absorbing are worth naming. Tenku Sushi Elevation is now open, pairing a sleek lounge atmosphere with sushi, sashimi, premium seafood, and refined presentation. It sits in the mall's new "jewel box buildings," which include outdoor patio dining and a rooftop bar. Next to it, Luga Italian Eatery opened in November at the Avenue East Cobb with an open kitchen and a 28-seat bar, founded by brothers Ben and Seth Gjuka, with homemade pappardelle with wild boar ragu and a wood-fired Margherita pizza among the top-rated items. Their sister bakery, Giulia, specializes in pastries, croissants, and coffee drinks, expanded from a first location at The Forum Peachtree Corners.
The Avenue has also turned The Plaza into a de facto public living room on summer weekends. The Avenue East Cobb is keeping World Cup energy going through the holiday weekend with a Monday night USA match set for the jumbo LED screen in The Plaza on July 6, 2026 at 8 pm, with seating first come, first served and guests encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The Plaza is East Cobb's official Hometown Hangout spot for games, series, tournaments, and other big screen events, with free screenings and onsite restaurants for dinner before and during the match. If you have not yet used the Plaza as an outdoor dinner-and-a-game spot, this is the summer to test it.
What is opening along Roswell Road
The Roswell Road corridor also picked up new arrivals this year, and they are worth knowing by address.
- Taqueria El Güero, 2200 Roswell Rd, Suites 160 and 170. Opened in January 2026 with counter service, a salsa and toppings bar, and a menu covering tacos, tortas, burritos, quesadillas, sopes, nachos, flautas, and huaraches, with birria tacos and birria ramen adding a twist beyond the usual plate.
- Aapka Food Adda (AFA), expanded. AFA added more seating, more variety, and a buffet, with a wide-ranging Indian menu covering popular street food, curry house staples, and hearty plates, plus buffet options with multiple vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections.
- Casa Grande Bar & Grill, Marietta. Opened on February 13, 2026 as a second location alongside its Austell restaurant, with scratch-made dishes and standouts including Molcajete, Parrillada Rey, Lomo Saltado, and Tacos de Birria.
- Dumpling Master, coming soon. The Georgia-based brand known for soup dumplings, pan-fried dumplings, sheng jian bao, noodles, fried rice, dim sum, and bubble tea has listed Marietta as a coming-soon location, with the East Cobb site giving Providence Square a new food tenant in a highly visible endcap space with a patio; the brand began in Peachtree City in 2024. The Providence Square placement is notable given what just left the same center.
The relocation, and the identity change
Two more moves belong on the map. Reunion Kitchen & Bar closed its current East Cobb location at 1255 Johnson Ferry Road #16 in The Market Plaza Shopping Center on June 7, 2026, in the former Red Sky Tapas & Bar space, with owners citing rising rent and operating costs and framing the move as a relocation rather than a permanent goodbye. The next address has not been announced yet, so if Reunion was your standing spot for live music and a cocktail, you have a summer to fill.
The other one is subtler. Mezza Luna Pasta and Seafood at 2100 Roswell Rd is not closing, but it is becoming a different restaurant. Mezza Luna is scheduled to become Trattoria Bella in September of 2026, with Chef Daniele Furfaro and his wife Bella Furfaro, both from Italy, giving the restaurant a stronger Italian identity built around handmade pastas, seafood, and wine, separating it from the Smyrna Mezza Luna. Same address, same team, different menu and different name on the awning. Worth knowing before you show up expecting the old menu in the fall.

That is not a comprehensive list. It is a rearrangement of muscle memory. Most of the swaps sit within a two-mile stretch of Roswell Road, which is the point.
The standing dates that anchor the calendar
Two summer fixtures survived the shakeup intact. Taste of East Cobb took place on Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church from 11 am to 5 pm, showcasing East Cobb's culinary scene. Attendees could taste dishes from more than 20 local restaurants and enjoy live performances by Walton High School, Wheeler High School, Dickerson Middle School, and Dodgen Middle School. Proceeds benefit the Walton Band Parent Association and the school's band programs. Mark next May now if you missed it this year.
The Avenue's Plaza schedule is the other reliable one for summer. Beyond the World Cup slate, it hosts seasonal events like Avenue Shamrock on March 12, 2026 at The Plaza with festive décor, live music, and playful activities. The pattern is worth adopting: check the Plaza calendar before you plan a Thursday or Saturday evening.
What the reshuffle actually tells you
Restaurant churn happens everywhere. What is worth noticing here is the direction. Three of the four longest-tenured closures sat in strip-center anchor slots, and the openings that replaced any of that dinner traffic mostly did not go back into those same centers. They landed at Avenue East Cobb or along a compact stretch of Roswell Road with new signage, new patios, and, in Tenku's case, a rooftop bar. The old rhythm of "meet you at Providence Square" or "meet you at Publix at Shallowford" is quietly being replaced by "meet you at the Avenue."
