Comparing Public High Schools in East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta & Dunwoody

Comparing Public High Schools in East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta & Dunwoody

When relocating to Metro Atlanta, school districts are often one of many factors buyers want to understand as they begin comparing communities.

East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton and Dunwoody each offer different public-school systems, attendance zones, academic programs and extracurricular opportunities. For someone moving from outside Atlanta, simply understanding which schools serve which areas can be confusing.

As a REALTOR®, my role is not to tell a buyer which school is “best.” Instead, I can help you understand the geography of the different communities, identify the school attendance zone associated with a property and point you toward reliable resources so you can research the schools that matter to you.

Here is a starting point for several of the North Atlanta communities buyers frequently ask me about.

East Cobb Public High Schools

East Cobb is part of the Cobb County School District and includes several different high-school attendance zones.

Among the high schools serving portions of East Cobb are:

Walton High School
Lassiter High School
Pope High School
Wheeler High School

The attendance boundaries do not follow ZIP codes perfectly, which is an important distinction when searching for a home.

For example, two homes with the same Marietta mailing address can be assigned to completely different elementary, middle and high schools.

Buyers interested in East Cobb can research individual schools, academic offerings, enrollment information and current attendance boundaries through the Cobb County School District.

Independent resources such as U.S. News & World Report and Niche also publish school data and rankings for buyers who want additional information.

A Note About Wheeler High School

Wheeler High School is also home to the Center for Advanced Studies in Science, Math & Technology, a specialized magnet program.

Admission to a magnet program is separate from simply living within a school's attendance zone, so buyers interested in specialty programs should research current admissions requirements directly with the school district.

Alpharetta and Milton Public High Schools

Alpharetta and Milton are primarily served by Fulton County Schools.

Depending upon the property's exact location, high schools in this portion of North Fulton can include:

Alpharetta High School
Milton High School
Cambridge High School

This is one area where buyers should pay particularly close attention to attendance boundaries.

An Alpharetta mailing address does not necessarily mean a home is assigned to Alpharetta High School.

Homes marketed with an Alpharetta address can fall within different school attendance zones, and nearby properties can sometimes have different school assignments.

Fulton County Schools provides attendance-zone maps, school profiles, academic-program information and other resources for buyers wanting to research a particular school.

Roswell Public High Schools

Roswell is also primarily served by Fulton County Schools.

Depending upon the property's location, buyers searching in Roswell may encounter high-school assignments including:

Roswell High School
Centennial High School

As with Alpharetta, school assignments should be verified property by property rather than assumed from the city or mailing address.

Roswell also sits close to East Cobb, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs, which means buyers relocating to this part of Metro Atlanta often compare homes across several different school districts and municipalities during the same search.

Dunwoody Public High Schools

Dunwoody is located in DeKalb County and is served by the DeKalb County School District.

Dunwoody High School serves much of the Dunwoody area.

Buyers considering Dunwoody can research current attendance boundaries, academic programs and school information directly through DeKalb County Schools.

School Rankings Are Only One Source of Information

School rankings are readily available online, and many buyers use them as one piece of their research.

U.S. News & World Report, Niche and other third-party organizations publish information about schools using their own methodologies. Because those methodologies differ, rankings can vary considerably from one source to another.

There are also many characteristics of a school that cannot be captured by a single number.

Depending upon what matters to you or your student, you may want to research:

  • Advanced Placement and honors courses
  • STEM and magnet opportunities
  • Fine arts and performing arts
  • Athletics
  • Clubs and extracurricular activities
  • Foreign-language programs
  • Graduation and college-readiness data
  • School size and enrollment
  • Special academic programs

Whenever possible, I also encourage relocating buyers to visit schools, speak directly with school administrators and review information published by the school district.

School Attendance Zones Matter When Buying a Home

One of the most important things I can help buyers understand is the difference between a city, mailing address, ZIP code and school attendance zone.

They are not interchangeable.

A Marietta address does not tell you which East Cobb high school serves a home.

An Alpharetta address does not guarantee an Alpharetta High School assignment.

And school attendance boundaries can change.

If a particular school assignment is important to your home purchase, always verify the current attendance zone directly with the appropriate school district before purchasing a property.

Comparing East Cobb, Roswell, Alpharetta and Dunwoody

For buyers relocating to North Atlanta, schools are usually only one part of a much larger decision.

I can help clients compare the practical differences between these communities, including:

  • Housing styles and neighborhoods
  • Home prices
  • Property taxes
  • Commute patterns
  • Access to major highways
  • Proximity to private schools
  • Shopping and dining
  • Parks and recreation
  • Lot sizes
  • New construction versus established neighborhoods

From there, buyers can determine which areas they would like to explore further based upon their own priorities.

That's an important distinction.

My job is to give you information, resources and real estate expertise so that you can decide where you want to live.
